HOLIDAYS IN CHARENTE FRANCE, SELF-CATERING HOLIDAY HOMES IN CHARENTE
Holidays in Charente France, self-catering holiday homes in Charente, Gites to rent in the Charente, vacation cottages, houses with swimming pools.
Whilst estate agents in the Charente were having a hay day, expats trying to rent out their self-catering holiday homes were coming under greater pressure. Ironically, the majority of guests they were getting were people who were in the Charente looking to buy a property with a view to also offering holidays of some description. Whilst obviously thankful for the rental income, owners must have felt it was like grabbing the bull by the tail; as their guests would one day become even more competitors.

HOLIDAYS IN CHARENTE FRANCE
By the turn of the century, the team at France One Call were extremely concerned about the state of the markets. They were turning away more and more potential advertisers with unsuitable or low quality properties and hearing more and more nightmare stories from holidaymakers who were complaining about holiday homes they had booked in previous years through other internet sites. The number of Expats trying to generate an income through letting self-catering holiday homes in France had increased 1000% in less than fifteen years. The quality of accommodation being offered at dropped significantly and the market was coming under pressure from cheaper holiday destinations like Turkey, Bulgaria and Morocco.
To make things worse, holiday home owners had not been able to put prices up in a decade, and in many cases had had to drop prices in order to compete. And those holiday home owners who had been letting for more than a decade had seen the number of weeks they could expect to let fall by as much as 50%. Yet still the Brits who wanted to buy into the dream kept coming and piling on the pressure.
Brits who moved to the Charente in the late nineties or first seven years of this century would have paid over the odds for their property; paid over the odds to have any work carried out to renovate it; and were now unable to generate the kind of rental income the estate agents had promised them were possible.

GITES TO RENT IN THE CHARENTE
Anyone with a little IT knowledge tried setting up internet sites in competition with France One Call with most ending up offering free advertising to try and attract advertisers. Most of these sites have long gone along with their owners. Anyone who had done their own bodged restoration work on their own Gites were now telling people they were builders; despite the fact they'd never so much as picked up a brick before leaving the UK. And if you didn't know anything about building a website or had a bad back and therefore prevented from being a builder, you became and estate agent and helped compound the growing problem.
Paul Herbert from France One Call says. "Tourism at the best of times is the most fragile of industries. 9/11, oil prices, property slumps and someone's in-growing toenail can all affect the holiday market. We had a responsibility to help our existing members get bookings and do our best to ensure that the holidaymakers who use our free service find good quality and sensibly priced holiday homes. Whilst some of the hard luck stories we were hearing from Expats who were struggling to get bookings were heart wrenching; we just could not accept poor quality properties on our database. Our members who had been offering high quality accommodation would have been tarred by the same brush."
VACATION COTTAGES
It is very difficult to compare holiday homes over the internet based solely on photographs and text as many a frequent visitor to France has discovered. What may look like to similar properties at a comparable price can end up being like chalk and cheese. One can be set in mature gardens with stunning views, whilst the other can be next to a farm with restricted views. Location, when booking a holiday home in the Charente is everything. You could be happy in a shack provided you are overlooking paradise and be miserable in a palace if it is situated on the A10.
HOUSES WITH SWIMMING POOLS
Well established members of France One Call who were offering holiday homes in the Charente were certainly doing better than most. Bookings during this period tended to remain constant but they were unable to increase prices because of the huge amount of competition from new owners of holiday homes in the Charente.
