By the turn of the century, property prices in France and especially in the French countryside were spiralling out of control. Whilst not comparable to houses prices in the UK, the gap was certainly closing and closing fast. To meet the continuing demand, people started looking at the Charente as the next place to buy holiday homes as prices had not increased so much.

However, whilst Brits were paying far too much to buy a holiday home as prices spiralled; the over supply of Gite rentals caused by so many expats moving into the selfcatering holiday market was causing bookings across the board to drop, along with the prices holiday home owners, desperate to fill weeks could charge. This may sound like good news for holidaymakers and for visitors to France who were only interested in how much a holiday in the Charente cost, it was; providing of course that they didn't care about the standard of accommodation.
As France One Call found themselves having to re-home more and more holidaymakers who had found themselves booked into sub standard or uninhabitable accommodation the same questions always cropped up.
HOLIDAY HOMES IN CHARENTE FRANCE
France One Call were turning more and more potential advertisers with substandard properties away in the full knowledge and unable to stop the fact that these holiday home owners would be able to advertise elsewhere with no questions asked. Property owners who had over paid for a property and then had to pay through the nose to get them renovated were desperate to generate rental income to cover their mortgages. And holidaymakers, instead of asking why a property was so cheap simply booked in the belief that they had picked up a bargain.
France One Call on the other hand, although unable to advise their advertisers to increase their rents along with inflation were at least maintaining prices and quality and continuing to fill their advertisers weeks. Holidaymakers who may have been encouraged to slip away to a competitor because of costs were now coming back having spent a miserable holiday in properties that did not bear description as a holiday home.

GITES RENTALS IN CHARENTE
Supply was still rampaging ahead as more people bought into the dream, house prices in the Charente were creeping up and overall, rental incomes were dropping just as fast. Yet estate agents still kept selling the dream on the basis that there was always another mug who would walk through their door and be prepared to buy a ruin.
Julia at France One Call says. "Having bought the property and paid for the renovation the holiday home owner would normally contact us to advertise it. Many got declined at the first hurdle simply because they did not make the grade. Those that did were often in for a shock though. In order to get a decent return on their original investment, many new holiday home owners believed they could ask the moon for their property and fill it for most of the year. When ever I asked them how they arrived at this idea, their response was always based on what they estate agent had told them."

So whilst the number of holiday homes to rent in the Charente was increasing and rental incomes were dropping, there was an hiatus where the dream and reality were circling each other just waiting for a major collision. Surprisingly, this didn't happen for another five or six years.
In the meantime, more and more people were moving to south west France with a view to offering holidays in the Charente.
