Whilst Expats were struggling to rent out their holiday cottages in the Charente, Brits who had purchased in North West France were struggling to rent out their holiday cottages in Brittany. For some reason, the Scots and northerners tend to buy more properties in Brittany than anywhere else in France. It may have something to do with the proximity of owning a holiday cottage in Brittany having made a long drive down through the UK.

However, because Expats seem to have collected together in Brittany, they have found they have had added problems to Brits living further south. It has to be said that some people who moved to the Charente and Dordogne would have encountered a certain amount of hostility from the locals; especially where whole villages had all but been taken over by expats and pushed the local French residents out.
However, in Brittany, this problem seemed to have been more virulent in the countryside because Bretagnes see themselves as distinctly different to the rest of France. Rather like the Welsh back in the sixties and seventies, Bretagnes have been keen to protect their own language and national identity. To be fair, they are just as anti Parisians as they are the British; some of the locals are becoming more partisan by the day and who came blame them.

Further south, expats have pushed the locals out of whole communities and helped property prices rise above anything the locals can afford. In Brittany as well as the Dordogne and Charente, the British have set up their enclaves and started building their own Anglican churches, English book clubs, and even opened corner shops selling British produce to Brits who miss their baked beans and PG tips. Considering many of them moved to France and cited concerns over lax UK immigration regulations, most of you will sense a certain amount of irony here.

In Brittany, it is not unusual to see graffiti on walls saying "Brits go home" and it has to be said, but many well established and integrated Expats hold pretty much the same sentiment. Those people who moved to Brittany more than a decade ago didn't move to France with a view to rubbing shoulders with the kind of people they left the UK to get away from. They now find themselves walking around supermarkets where the customers all speak English and do so at the tops of their voices. For many Brits who have taken the trouble to learn the language and are not part of the Expat scene, these new immigrants are a source of constant embarrassment.

Of course this anti British feeling hasn't resulted in burning cottages yet but many an Expat has found themselves in an uncomfortable situation where their local Marie has made it more difficult to get planning permission. Fifteen plus years ago, anyone moving to France tended to just blend into the scenery and make friends with the locals who were only to glad to have someone different join the ranks. Nowadays, French people complain that they have no one who speaks French living in their village or commune.
The Dordogne and certain parts of Brittany have become settlements for people who want to live in France but create their own little England. This is all well and good but holidaymakers wanting to visit Brittany and needing assistance in times of an emergency have discovered that their host holiday home owners don't speak enough French to be able to call a doctor or explain any symptoms.
France One Call who have advertise a range of coastal cottages and country houses in Brittany have members who have lived in Brittany for fifteen years and more and are all well integrated into the Bretagne culture.
Brittany still remains a popular holiday destination as far as holidaymakers coming over from the UK are concerned. The mild climate and sandy beaches of the south and the rocky coastal inlets of Northern Brittany offer fabulous beach holidays and there is nowhere in Brittany that isn't less than an hours drive to any beach.
