Aquitaine Historical Society: Eugène le Roy, his life and work - talk in English by Julianna Lees on Wednesday 16 January, 11h, at Coutures

The novelist Eugène le Roy was born in the château at Hautfort in 1836, the son of upper servants, and died a respectable bourgeois writer in Montignac in 1907. All his books are set in the Périgord and feature peasantry, bourgeois and aristocracy from a radical (and usually anti-clerical) point of view. 'L'Ennemi de la Mort' and 'Jacquou le Croquant' have been televised and a new film version, 'Jacquou', was released in 2007. The talk is a revised version of one given some years ago.

The 16 January meeting is preceded by the agm and followed by pot-luck lunch.
